The faults we see most on Glow-worm boilers in London

Glow-worm is part of the Vaillant Group, which is why many of its faults and error codes look familiar — the internals share design DNA with Vaillant ecoTEC. Across London we see F1 low-pressure lockouts (usually a slow leak on the system, not the boiler itself), F4 flame-loss faults on ageing ignition electrodes, and F22 pressure switch or sensor issues on units that have never been properly serviced.

The upside is strong parts availability and long-lived heat exchangers on the Ultimate and Energy ranges. Combine a repair with a magnetic filter and an annual service and most Glow-worms will run cleanly for another decade.

Glow-worm error codes explained

F1

Glow-worm F1 — Low water pressure — system below 0.5 bar

MEDIUM

Repressurise to 1.5 bar. Recurring F1 means a leak — book a trace, don’t keep topping up.

F4

Glow-worm F4 — Flame loss during operation

HIGH

Often ignition electrode wear or a gas supply issue. Engineer only.

F9

Glow-worm F9 — Flow temperature sensor fault

MEDIUM

Usually a failed NTC sensor. A single-visit fix if the diagnosis is confirmed on the phone.
F22

Glow-worm F22 — Low water pressure switch fault

MEDIUM

Pressure switch or wiring. Sometimes clears with a proper repressurise; recurring means the switch itself.
F28

Glow-worm F28 — Ignition lockout

HIGH

Ignition electrodes, gas valve or PCB. Don’t keep resetting — book an engineer.

Glow-worm repair FAQs

Are Glow-worm boilers reliable?
Yes — they’re built by the Vaillant Group and share many parts with Vaillant boilers. Well-serviced, 10–12 years is normal.

Many core components are shared or very close cousins, which is why parts availability and diagnostic paths are similar. Our engineers work on both every week.

In most cases yes. We carry the common Glow-worm parts on the van and can usually be with you inside 60–90 minutes.
£280–£450 fitted for most models. We’ll always quote before starting work and tell you honestly if the repair no longer stacks up against a new boiler.

Yes — genuine or manufacturer-approved parts, which protects any remaining warranty.
