Baxi E133 Fault: The Gas Supply and Ignition Guide

The short answer

The Baxi E133 fault means the boiler tried to ignite and failed, or lost its flame, and has locked out. The most common cause is interrupted gas supply, including an empty prepayment meter. Check your meter and other gas appliances, reset once, and call a Gas Safe engineer if E133 returns.

What does E133 actually mean?

Every time a Vaillant fires up, it runs a quiet self-test most owners never notice. The pump starts, and the boiler watches its water pressure sensor for a small, brief rise in pressure, the signature of water beginning to move. If that rise does not appear within a few seconds, the boiler concludes one of two things: either the pump is not moving water, or the sensor cannot see that it is. Rather than heat a system it cannot verify is circulating, it stops and displays F75.

That design explains everything useful about this code. F75 is not a single broken part; it is a failed conversation between two parts, the pump and the sensor, and the fault can live at either end of that conversation or in the water between them. It is one of the most common codes on the ecoTEC range, it has a well-known relationship with dirty system water, and it is the code most likely to appear intermittently for weeks before becoming permanent, which is precisely the window in which it is cheapest to fix.

Which Baxi boilers show E133?

Across the modern range: the Duo-tec combi in all its versions (comfortably the most common E133 caller in London), the Platinum, the 800 and 600 series, EcoBlue models, and Baxi-platform siblings including many Potterton and Main boilers, which share the control system and the code. The diagnosis below applies across them; the reset control varies slightly by model and is covered in the steps.

An empty or low prepayment meter, a smart meter in a fault state, a gas emergency control valve nudged partially closed, an interrupted street supply, or in hard frosts a frozen external meter regulator: all of them starve the burner and produce E133. None of them are boiler faults, and all of them are free to identify.

A frozen condensate pipe

In freezing weather, the small white waste pipe outside blocks with ice, the boiler cannot drain and refuses to sustain ignition. Worn ignition or flame-sensing electrodes

The components that spark the flame and confirm it exists age with every startup. Weak spark or unreliable sensing produces the intermittent version of E133: fine for days, locked out on a damp morning, fine again after a reset. Intermittency with weather is the electrode signature, and replacement is one of the cheaper repairs on the menu.

Gas valve faults

The valve that meters gas to the burner can stick or drift out of adjustment, delivering too little gas to sustain a flame. Engineer territory, diagnosed with proper working-pressure tests rather than guesswork.

Flue or combustion problems

A blocked or badly terminating flue disturbs the air-gas balance enough to defeat ignition. Less common, but it is why an E133 diagnosis includes the flue and not just the sparky parts.

Last on the list because it is least frequent and because everything cheaper must be ruled out first. A PCB quote without that rule-out process is a guess wearing a price tag.

What you can safely check before calling anyone

Check how the property pays for gas. Prepayment meter: confirm there is credit, and that the meter screen shows supply on, not a fault or OFF state. This one check resolves more London E133s than every part in the van.

Test another gas appliance. If the hob will not light either, the problem is supply, not the boiler; contact your supplier, or your landlord if you rent.

Check the gas emergency control valve near the meter is fully open, its lever in line with the pipe.

In freezing weather, inspect the external condensate pipe and thaw any iced section with warm, never boiling, water.

Reset once: on most Duo-tec and Platinum models, turn the selector to the reset position and back, or press and hold the reset button per your model’s manual, then allow a complete ignition attempt.

If E133 returns, stop. Note whether the boiler attempted ignition (clicking, brief flame sounds) or stayed silent, tell the engineer, and book the visit. Repeated resets against a genuine fault achieve nothing.

A note for landlords, because E133 is a landlord’s code

The Duo-tec’s dominance in rental stock means E133 is disproportionately a tenanted-property fault, and it comes with a specific trap: a tenant reports “the boiler is broken”, a contractor is dispatched, and the fault turns out to be meter credit, at the cost of a callout. Our process screens for it: we ask the tenant the meter question on the phone, free, before any visit is booked. Smart meters, supplier switches and the E133 nobody’s boiler caused

A growing share of London E133s trace to the meter rather than either the boiler or the credit. Smart prepayment meters can sit in states that quietly cut gas while looking normal at a glance: supply set to OFF after a top-up that has not registered, a failed remote update from the supplier, or the connection between the in-home display and the meter dropping so the credit you loaded never reached the valve. The check that matters is on the meter itself, not the in-home display: the meter screen should show supply ON. If it shows OFF, an error, or a message about connection, many meters restore supply through a hold of button A or B (the meter’s own instructions or your supplier’s app cover the sequence), and the fix costs nothing.

Two further supplier-side traps are worth knowing. After switching supplier, prepayment credit and tariff modes occasionally misapply, cutting gas until the supplier corrects it. And during cold snaps, network-level pressure drops in a street can starve boilers at the far end of a run, producing simultaneous E133s in neighbouring homes; if a neighbour’s boiler is down too, call the supplier before calling anyone with a van. E133 on Potterton and Main boilers

Because Potterton and Main share the Baxi control platform, their boilers show the same E133 for the same reasons, and everything in this guide applies to them directly. The one practical difference is age profile: London’s Potterton stock in particular skews older, which shifts the probabilities slightly away from the meter and toward tired electrodes and gas valves, and makes the repair-versus-replace comparison worth requesting sooner. What does an E133 repair cost in London?

When the cause is the meter, the valve position or a frozen pipe, it costs nothing but the checks above. Engineer repairs run to type: ignition and flame-sensing electrode replacement £120 to £240, condensate remedial work £95 to £180, gas valve investigation and replacement £220 to £400, flue work quoted on findings, and control board replacement £300 to £500. Every quote is fixed after diagnosis. What the engineer will do

A proper E133 diagnosis follows the gas, in order, from the meter to the flame. The engineer confirms supply and standing pressure at the appliance, then tests working pressure with the boiler calling for heat, which separates a supply starved at source from one restricted in between. The condensate route is checked end to end, because a partial blockage produces intermittent ignition failure that mimics electrical faults. Then the ignition chain: electrodes inspected, gapped and tested, the flame-sensing circuit read while the boiler attempts to light, the gas valve tested for correct operation and adjustment, and the flue examined for obstruction or recirculation. The order is deliberate: each step either finds the fault or eliminates the cheapest remaining explanation, so by the time anyone mentions a gas valve or a control board, the parts below them on the price list have been ruled out in front of you. That is also your quality check on any firm: a diagnosis that starts at the expensive end worked backwards from the invoice.

Most E133s are preventable, because most trace to things that announce themselves. Prepayment households: set a low-credit alert in the supplier’s app, and keep emergency credit understood by everyone in the home, because the meter always empties on the coldest night. Before each winter, insulate the external condensate pipe if last year’s frost caught it; the materials cost a few pounds. And book the annual boiler service in early autumn, because electrode wear, the leading component cause, is exactly what a service inspects and catches before the damp morning that turns wear into lockout.
