What is boiler kettling?
The name is exact: a kettling boiler sounds like a kettle because it has quietly become one. In a healthy boiler, water flows smoothly across the heat exchanger and carries heat away as fast as it arrives. When limescale and magnetite sludge coat that exchanger, they trap water in hot spots where it flashes to steam, and the collapsing steam bubbles produce the rumble, bang and whistle you can hear from the next room. London’s hard water makes the capital a kettling heartland, and the sound is worth taking seriously: the same deposits causing the noise are insulating the exchanger, forcing the boiler to burn more gas for less heat and stressing the metal with every steam pop. Left for years, kettling ends in heat exchanger failure, one of the most expensive repairs on any boiler.
What does each noise mean?
Not every noise is kettling, and the differences are diagnostic. A deep rumble or banging from the boiler itself while heating runs is classic kettling: scale or sludge on the exchanger. Whistling that rises with temperature is the same fault earlier in life, or occasionally a flow restriction. Gurgling or slurping, especially in cold weather, points away from the exchanger and toward a frozen condensate pipe or air in the system; our frozen condensate guide covers the winter version. Tapping or ticking from pipes rather than the boiler is usually thermal expansion, pipework moving against joists as it heats, irritating but rarely serious. And a droning or humming that changes with heating demand often traces to the pump running too fast or wearing out. How is kettling fixed?
The fix targets the deposits, not the noise. An engineer confirms the cause, then treats the system according to how far it has gone: a chemical descaler or cleanser circulated through the system for lighter scale, a full power flush where sludge has taken hold across the radiators too, and in advanced cases mechanical cleaning or, where the exchanger is damaged, component replacement. The honest caveat we give every kettling caller: a flush treats the water, and if the exchanger’s internal waterways are already heavily scaled, some noise can persist even after a proper clean, which is why we assess before quoting rather than promising silence. Prevention is the better economics: inhibitor maintained at every annual service and a magnetic filter fitted, which together stop the deposits reforming. What does fixing a noisy boiler cost?
London ranges: a chemical cleanse £120 to £250, a full power flush £350 to £600 depending on radiator count, a pump adjustment or replacement £95 to £350, and pipework securing for expansion noise £95 to £160. A kettling assessment usually resolves into one of the first two, and the earlier you treat it, the cheaper the treatment: whistling this winter costs less than banging next winter.

Is a kettling boiler dangerous?
Not acutely; modern boilers are protected against genuine overheating. The danger is financial: efficiency loss now and an exchanger failure later.
Why did the noise start after my new boiler was fitted?
Almost always because a dirty old system was connected to it without a proper flush; the sludge moved in with the furniture. It needs treating quickly, both for the noise and because a sludged system can void the new boiler’s warranty.
Can I use a descaler additive myself?
Off-the-shelf inhibitors are fine for maintenance, but a system already kettling needs the deposits removed, not just future ones prevented.
Will bleeding radiators stop the banging?
It cures air noises, not kettling; if bleeding brings silence, your problem was air all along, which is the cheapest outcome on this page.
